Still prowlin'
I have just realized that I have not truly, officially "pimped" one of my very favorite bloggers here.
Shame on me!
Well, let me correct the situation quick, fast, and in a hurry.
Prowlin' With Matt the Cat
Matt the Cat, aka Our Furry Leader, is a living, breathing encyclopedia of early rock n' roll, soul, and R & B. Through him, I gained a new appreciation of doo-wop. He had a nightly show on XM radio Fifties on Five called "The Night Prowl Show." He'd keep us rockin' with Bluesday Tuesday, West Coast Wednesday, Doo Wop Thursday and his "Harlem" features.
I remember the first time I ever called in a request. He used to answer the phone, "Who's rockin' my satellite?" (Remember this was XM Satellite Radio.) I asked him to play "Breathless" by The Killer Himself, Jerry Lee Lewis. And Matt the Cat said, "Have MERCY, Baby!" (He said that a lot on the air... and it always left ME breathless!)
The Furry One developed quite a following, but if you ever heard him, you'd be hooked, too. His passion for the music, his style, and his fun loving attitude are infectious. He can turn anybody into a rock n' roll, rhythm and blues, and soul devotee. Even my kids adored him. It was obvious that Matt the Cat not only cared about the music - he cared about his listeners. And we loved him.
But XM merged with Sirius and in a stroke of stupidity they let Matt the Cat go. All us Night Prowlers have been lost ever since.
Well, almost.
Matt never abandoned us and still keeps the music alive on his blog.
Every Friday night on the Night Prowl Show, he staged the "Friday Night Cat Fight." In the Cat Fight, he would play 2 songs - actually one song, but by 2 different artists. He'd then open up the phone lines and let the people vote on which one was their favorite. It was a big deal to tune in on Friday nights and see who'd be battling it out.
I remember one of the very first Friday Night Cat Fights I ever listened to. The song was "Fever." I remember Peggy Lee was one of the singers, but I don't remember who the other one was. It was probably the other person who won the fight. I had a history of nearly always picking the LOSERS!
Matt still has the Friday Night Cat Fight on the web. Prowl over there and have a listen... maybe you'll (re)discover the real soul of rock n' roll! You can even vote online for your favorite contender in the fight.
As of right now, Matt the Cat isn't on the air anywhere, but I am confident that somebody is gonna grab him up real quick and get His Furryness back on the airwaves where he belongs!
