Why start your own Victory Garden, and a free e-book
Food for Thought:
"If every U.S. citizen ate just one meal a week (any meal) composed of locally and organically raised meats and produce, we would reduce our country’s oil consumption by over 1.1 million barrels of oil every week. That’s not gallons, but barrels."*
- Oily Food, by Steven Hopp
A Victory Garden can help you accomplish this...and so much more!
Gardening is an excellent way to increase food security (the amount and quality of food) in America. If you grow the food yourself, then you know what went into it. No more questioning whether or not your lettuce has been tainted with sewage. No more salmonella scares. No more wondering if that so-called organic produce is REALLY organic.
Gardening enables youth, families and entire communities to improve their access to good food. On your next trip to the grocery store, take a good look at the price of fresh produce. It's outrageous! For many low income people (heck, for many middle class families these days), fresh produce is simply out of their price range. Home and community gardens help provide fresh produce and whole foods to some people who can't otherwise afford it.
Good food - garden fresh food - is:
-
Healthy - because it's fresh and minimally processed.
-
Green - because it's produced and distributed in a way that supports a healthy and sustainable environment. It's local - no long-distance hauling. It also promotes the local economy.
-
Fair - because it generates an equitable wage for those producing and selling it.
Affordable - for Everyone. Access to good food should be a right, not a privilege.
Do your part to demonstrate your commitment to good food by starting your own Victory Garden in 2009. This is the perfect time of year to open a seed catalog or visit a local nursery for inspiration.
I found this wonderful FREE resource for beginning gardeners and I thought I'd share it with you:
So You Want To Grow Your Own Food
This is a free e-book from Dr. Karen Bledsoe and it's a great read for anyone who is interested in vegetable gardening but needs a little help getting started. She talks about all sorts of things - from how to plan your garden to what to grow and even how to feed your soil.
