How To Keep Legs Smooth During Dry Months

When winter starts to set in, you know the dreaded dry-weather days are coming. That's when there's so little moisture in your skin - and in the air - that after only a few weeks your legs and feet look as parched and cracked as an empty riverbed. Instead of just waiting out the winter, hiding legs under long pants and tights, get those stems back in summer shape! Here are some dry skin remedies that will keep your legs looking and feeling smoother all winter long.

Exfoliate every week.

Those flaky patches on dry skin are simply dead cells that haven't fallen off on their own, so your first step is to get rid of the cell accumulation. Grab some body scrub and a washcloth, wet the skin and use the cloth or your hands to rub the scrub in a circular motion. Make sure you don't miss the spots where dead cells accumulate most, like knees and heels. Once you're scrubbed up, use warm water to rinse the body scrub off. You can then bathe yourself as usual; use a moisturizing shower gel to keep skin hydrated.

Lotion up every day.

Maybe even several times a day, if you have very dry skin. When you're finished exfoliating, apply rejuvenating cream or moisturizing cream onto your legs and feet, and massage it in. Again, focus extra attention on heels and knees. Let the lotion absorb; you may want to put on socks or cotton pants so you can continue your routine while your hydrating cream absorbs.

In addition to applying skin lotions post-exfoliation, you may also want to apply first thing in the morning, right before going to bed at night, or upon exiting the shower or bath. There are benefits to all three; in the morning, you'll have skin that glows all day. Before going to bed, you can use thicker formulas that may take longer to absorb, but since you'll be asleep it won't hinder your daily activities. And finally, the warm water of the shower or bath opens your skin's pores, so your natural skin cream is able to penetrate the epidermis better.

Use creamy gels every time you shave.

For a super-close shave, exfoliate beforehand. (Exfoliating post-shave can cause irritation.) By removing the dead cells first, your razor can get closer and give you even smoother legs. When you lather up, choose a creamy, moisturizing shave gel, which won't sap your legs of moisture. Finally, make sure the water is lukewarm, not hot.

Turn the heat down every time you shower.

Hot water feels fantastic in the cold winter, but it can contribute to your skin feeling dry and tight. Turn the heat down a notch, and shower under warm water instead. Once you step out of the shower, rub your natural skin lotion between your hands to heat it up a little, so it's not so jarring on warm legs.
