What Is Acne and What Causes Acne?
Acne is a skin condition that occurs when hair follicles of the skin become clogged with oil, resulting in pimples. Acne is usually found on the face, back and chest. Acne usually begins around puberty, and worsens during the teenage years. The hair follicles are connected to sebaceous glands, which secrete an oily substance that is known as sebum. Sebum is used to lubricate the hair and the skin. When the body produces excess amounts of sebum, usually during puberty and adolescence, the hair follicles become clogged, which causes inflammation of the skin and can cause acne. The face, neck, chest, back, shoulders, and arms have the sebaceous glands, which is why acne is the most common in these areas. Lets take a look at what plays a significant role in causing acne:
1) Diet: For years, scientists have claimed that acne and diet are not related to each other. However, recently there is evidence that says that diet can play a role in acne. New studies show that foods with a high glycemic index cause acne. These foods include; cakes, cookies, sodas, breads, etc. Eating these foods causes the body to release a hormone known as insulin to regulate that blood sugar. Once the blood sugar then drops, the body releases another hormone to raise the blood sugar back to the normal level. Some scientists say that all the extra hormone production can be the cause of acne. Dairy products are also said to produce acne, due to the hormones in the milk. To sum this up, diet does play a role in acne. To control acne, eat a low amount of sugars and greasy foods, and eat as many fruits and vegetables as possible.
2) Puberty: During puberty, the sebaceous glands produce more sebum. Sebum is an oil that moisturizers the hair and skin. The excess sebum combines with dead skin cells and clogs up the pores, resulting in acne breakouts. This is also true with women who are on their period or are pregnant. The sebaceous glands will continue to produce excessive sebum until around the age of 20. To control acne, teenagers should promote good hygiene and wash their face at least twice a day.
3) Stress: Many overlook how big of a factor stress plays in the cause of acne. When stressed, stress hormones raise testosterone levels, causing production of oil and causing breakouts. I remember when I came home from college after finals week. The first thing my Mom said to me was "Oh my God, your face looks horrible!" To control acne, try to remain calm, be sure to relax, and get enough sleep daily.
4) Hygiene: Showering and washing your face are the best ways to control acne. Dead skin cells, dirt, and bacteria all accumulate on your skin and cause acne. Also, keep your hands away from your face! To control acne, wash your face at least twice a day and promote good hygiene.
