Botox Is a General Muscle Relaxant and Offers a Solution for Many Conditions
The clinical name for Botox is Botulinum toxin and in 1989, it was internationally recognized as helpful for use in reducing eye spasms. As one ages, wrinkles naturally appear on the face. To prevent or minimize these, and to maintain a youthful look, Botox injections are used for treatment.
To minimize one's forehead lines, areas around the corners of the mouth and frown lines are treated. People use Botox as administered by qualified practitioners, and as a result, muscles do not contract and remain relaxed. Hence the non-appearance of wrinkles.
Botox is also used for hyperhidrosis; that is, excessive sweating. Patients who have excessive sweating in the armpits, hands, feet, face and body are given this injection. The patients suffering from this type of sweating can have a surgical operation but that involves complications, risks and cost. Botox is an easier alternative.
Botox is also used in bladder disorder treatment. Lack of ability to control the bladder creates an uncomfortable problem for women. Through its paralyzing function, Botox temporarily alleviates the symptoms and halts an overactive bladder. To sustain the effect, repeated injections of Botox should be given to the sufferer.
It is also used for treatment of migraines. Besides providing comfort for facial muscles, Botox stops the conveyance of nerve messages which can create a path for pain towards the brain.
Botox is considered appropriate for the treatment of Cervical Dystonia, an aching situation which causes uncontrollable and nonstop twitching movements in the neck. It distorts the normal posture of one's head. Normal movements are lost because uncontrollable muscle movements take over. Here, Botox gives comfort to the muscles and stops involuntary jerking of patients suffering from hypertonia.
It has been observed that Botox treats cerebral palsy in children. Moreover, it relaxes muscles and helps by improving limb function through interruption of the communication between the spinal cord and the nerves.
Treatment is applied with a delicate needle and is injected without anesthesia. The person being injected cannot drink alcohol for seven days prior to treatment; otherwise the required effect will not be fully achieved.
You should also stop taking aspirin fourteen days before the treatment.
The beneficial effects of Botox normally appear after seven days and will be evident for a period of four to six months. As a person's face gradually returns top normal, the lines will start to show again and at that point further treatment will be needed. Over the longer term, Wrinkles usually re-appear less severe as the muscles learn to relax.
One common side effect is bruising. Headaches can also develop but usually end in 24 to 28 hours although this is quite rare. A few patients may also develop eyelid drooping. This will always ends in three weeks. The reason for drooping is that Botox moves around, so the best advice is not to rub the area for several hours after your injection.
If you are pregnant or have a neurological disease, please avoid using Botox altogether.
