Hiccup does not only occur in adults, but can also occur in newborns. Hiccups in newborns, or adults, generally is normal and not dangerous. However, there are some signs of hiccups baby that needs more attention. Hiccups in newborns, caused by, the diaphragm muscle is being stimulated. Therefore, hiccups in infants, often caused by food or after a feeding. When they suckle, the diaphragm muscle doing activities, so it may be impaired. Hiccups is actually a reaction of the diaphragm, the muscle that separates the chest cavity and abdomen, right under the ribs that help control breathing. The reaction causes the diaphragm to tighten suddenly and without realizing it, closing the vocal cords in the throat, resulting in a distinctive sound of a hiccup at the top of the throat.
The cause of hiccups in babies
Hiccups occur when the diaphragm muscles suddenly contract triggered by irritation or stimulation of the muscles. Some doctors argue that hiccups in babies, usually caused by eating or drinking activities such as breastfeeding, infant formula or other foods. Can also be caused by a sudden drop in the temperature of the baby, such as a cold shower or exposed to cold air. Hiccups in infants is generally harmless, except severe hiccups, which is to interrupt eating and sleeping. Infants with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) may tend to experience more frequent hiccups, accompanied by vomiting, coughing and cranky.
Medically, hiccups, called the singultus. Triggers hiccups in infants can also occur because of, eating too much food, the entry of air when chewing or when the baby feels tense. Generally, hiccups occur when the baby is sucking excessive air during feeding. Making the baby burp after feeding is one way to remove the air from the stomach, in order to avoid the risk of the baby hiccups and other discomfort.
Although for some parents feel the baby hiccup quite disturbing, but in fact, not so for the baby. During the hiccups that happened, did not affect the activity of the baby. Each baby has different conditions, that is why, some babies are more likely susceptible to hiccups than other babies.
How to handles hiccups in babies
- When feeding, try to be the baby's head higher than the stomach, but not to bend the neck.
- Try to burp baby after feeding, if they did not immediately burp, then, stimulate by patting the back of the baby gently, while holding her. Do this between one to two minutes until the baby burp.
- Do not give the baby to eat or drink when they hiccup, wait until she calms down.
- Change position while nursing. When your baby is breastfed, often your baby swallowing excess air that trigger hiccups. Change the position of feeding your baby, so as to limit the amount of air that goes into the mouth. If the hiccups experienced by the baby more often, then you should suspend breastfeed, it is feared will make them choking.
Hiccups conditions need to be aware
For healthy babies, hiccups are common. It's just for some babies, hiccups can interfere with breathing. In addition, infants with gastroesophageal reflux disease or acid reflux is likely to be more frequent hiccups. Note also when the baby hiccups, if accompanied by the efforts of spitting, or coughing and fussy baby, consult a doctor about the condition.
You also need to be wary when uncontrollable hiccups, too frequent or occur continuously after children aged one year and above. Although very rare, it can be a sign of a more serious disease. Hiccups in premature infants who were on a ventilator, or mechanical ventilation can cause complications. This is because the possibility of a baby has problems upper airway obstruction and reduced respiratory rate.
